The Art of Asking for Advice: Don't Ask Everyone, Part 1

Transcript:

We’re working our way through some things to do when you ask for advice to make sure you get the best results possible.  I’m Dan Hansen and this is a Minute at RepcoLite.

Alright, today’s tip is this: when you ask for advice, Don’t Ask Everyone! More opinions are not BETTER and there are a number of reasons:

First, asking more people for their ideas means there is going to be a larger group of friends or family who’s ideas will not be implemented. Let’s be honest: you can’t implement every idea you hear. So, some well-intentioned ideas just aren’t put into practice.

And sadly, research shows that when you ask people for advice but don't listen to it, they tend to have a negative reaction–whether it be outward or internal. That's not right--and any of us giving advice should remember that and try to cut people some slack–but the reality is that people feel annoyed when their opinions aren't listened to. So minimize the potential awkwardness by reducing the number of people you ask for help!

There’s another very practical reason and we’ll get to that tomorrow! I’m Dan Hansen and that’s a Minute at RepcoLite.
