The Art of Asking for Advice: Don't Ask Everyone, Part 2

Transcript:

We’re working our way through some things to do when you ask for advice to make sure you get the best results possible.  I’m Dan Hansen and this is a Minute at RepcoLite.

Alright, today’s tip is this: when you ask for advice, Don’t Ask Everyone! More opinions are not BETTER. We covered the first reason this is true yesterday. Today, let’s hit the second. And it’s simply this: remember that MORE advice doesn't usually bring CLARITY to a situation.

In fact, having more input can often lead to decision paralysis. Think of the paint color rack--too many choices reduces our ability to make a selection. A friend of mine was painting a room a year or two ago and wanted to change up the color scheme. She picked out 10 color samples from Benjamin Moore, painted them all in sections on her wall and then, when family and friends came over for various reasons, she polled them all. And ended up with SO many opinions and suggestions that she was almost unable to move forward. Too many opinions isn't helpful. It shuts the decision making process down. Tomorrow we’ll wrap this up. I’m Dan Hansen and that’s a minute at RepcoLite.
