Psychologists suggest that George Washington's focus on what seems like insignificant home projects during the war helped him settle his mind. Making small decisions--even inconsequential decisions--gives us confidence and momentum and makes it easier for us to make bigger, weightier decisions.
So, when life's chaotic and challenging, maybe what we need to do is take on some small, manageable projects. It could be reorganizing a room. Maybe it's just reorganizing the silverware drawer. Maybe it's gardening. Maybe it's attacking the weeds growing in the cracks in the driveway. Maybe it's painting a closet. Who knows.
Little tasks like these can give us a mental break when we need it and can instill a sense of achievement--even if it's tiny. And that usually starts a domino effect of sorts--our confidence gets a boost and we feel energized to tackle something new. Something to think about.
